The incident occurred on Sunday, May 12 in Oyster Bay.
Nassau County Police reported that a man, 34, was walking his service dog near the water just before 8:30 p.m. when the dog went into the water for a swim.
However, during the swim, the pup got stuck underneath a dock and began to struggle.
The man contacted his girlfriend about the situation, who was able to use the dog’s GPS collar to locate the pair and contact the police.
While authorities were on the way to the scene, the man got into the water to save the dog.
He got the dog out of the water but became stuck himself.
An officer who arrived on the scene gave the man a life preserver to aid him; he was later saved by the Oyster Bay Fire Department, who used a rescue line to get the man out of the water.
No injuries were reported.
